How to Open Your Swimming Pool for Summer in Buckinghamshire
Spring is here, and for pool owners across Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire, that means one thing — it’s time to get the pool ready for the season ahead.
Opening a swimming pool after winter isn’t just a case of pulling back the cover and jumping in. Done properly, a spring opening sets your pool up for a safe, trouble-free summer. Done badly, you’re looking at green water, damaged equipment and expensive repair bills before you’ve had a single swim.
When Should You Open Your Pool?
Most pool owners across High Wycombe, Marlow, Beaconsfield and the surrounding areas aim to open their pools from late March through to the end of April. The water temperature is the key indicator — once it rises above 10°C consistently, algae starts to grow, and that’s when you want your sanitiser system up and running.
Opening too late means algae gets a head start. Opening too early just means your heating system is working overtime. Aim for late March to early April as a general rule for our part of the country.
What a Proper Pool Opening Involves
1. Remove and inspect the winter cover
The cover comes off first. Before storing it, it needs to be cleaned, dried and inspected for damage. A cover with small tears left untreated will fail completely within another season — worth addressing now rather than in October when you need it again.
2. Check water levels
Winter rain and evaporation will have affected the water level. Top it up to the midpoint of the skimmer before anything else is switched on.
3. Inspect and reinstall equipment
Any equipment removed for winter — ladders, handrails, return fittings, lights — goes back in now. Each one needs to be checked before installation. Corroded fittings, cracked o-rings and loose connections found now are easy fixes. Found mid-season with a full pool of swimmers, they become urgent problems.
4. Check the plant room
This is where most problems hide after winter. Key checks include:
- Pump and filter — run the system and listen for unusual noises. Check all unions and valves for weeping leaks.
- Heater — gas, oil and heat pump systems all need a check before firing up for the season.
- Chemical dosing systems — clean and calibrate any automatic dosing equipment.
- Pipework — check for any frost damage, particularly on exposed pipe runs.
5. Balance the water chemistry
This is the step most DIY pool owners get wrong. After winter, your water chemistry will be well outside normal parameters. The correct order is:
- Total alkalinity first — target 80–120 ppm
- pH second — target 7.2–7.6
- Calcium hardness — target 200–400 ppm
- Sanitiser last — target 1–3 ppm free chlorine
6. Shock treatment and initial filtration
Once the chemistry is balanced, a shock treatment kills off any algae spores and bacteria that have built up over winter. Run the filtration system continuously for 24–48 hours after shocking to turn the water over fully.
Why Use a Professional for Your Spring Opening?
For pool owners across Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire, the cost of a professional spring opening is almost always recovered in the money saved on chemicals, repairs and call-outs later in the season.
An experienced pool engineer will spot the small things that cause big problems — the weeping union that turns into a flood, the heater that’s struggling to fire cleanly, the filter media that’s at the end of its life. Catching these at opening costs far less than dealing with them in July when your pool is full and your guests have arrived.
At Powell Pools, we carry out spring openings across High Wycombe, Marlow, Henley-on-Thames, Beaconsfield, Amersham, Maidenhead, Gerrards Cross and the surrounding areas. Every opening follows the same thorough process and leaves your pool safe, balanced and swim-ready.
