Air Source Heat Pumps for Swimming Pools — Is It Worth It?

If you own a swimming pool in Buckinghamshire, Berkshire or Oxfordshire and you are still heating it with gas or an electric element, you are almost certainly spending more than you need to. Air source heat pumps have transformed pool heating over the last few years — and for most pool owners in our part of the country, the switch makes clear financial sense.

How Much Can You Save?

For every 1kW of electricity a heat pump uses, it typically produces 4 to 6kW of heat energy. That ratio — known as the Coefficient of Performance or COP — is what makes heat pumps so much cheaper to run than conventional heating.

Extended Swimming Season

Without supplementary heating, outdoor pools in Buckinghamshire are comfortably swimmable from late May to early September — roughly 14 to 16 weeks. A heat pump can push that out significantly in both directions. Many of our clients are swimming from April through to October — adding 6 to 8 weeks of season for relatively modest running costs.

What Does Installation Involve?

A typical heat pump installation for a domestic pool takes one day and involves a site survey, pipework connection into the existing circulation system, electrical connection via a dedicated circuit, commissioning and full handover.

At Powell Pools we carry out heat pump installations across High Wycombe, Marlow, Henley-on-Thames, Beaconsfield, Maidenhead, Gerrards Cross, Ascot and the wider Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire area. We handle everything from the initial survey through to commissioning — including a recent InverX IXR66 installation in Marlow delivering significant running cost savings for our client.
